Number Day 2025

Number Day 2025

Today at Hugo we celebrated and took part in the NSPCC Number Day. A day where the children really enjoy all things Maths! It's a great opportunity for children to apply their maths skills to everyday scenarios and tackle tricky problems in a range of contexts.

In Nursery we have been having fun with numbers and shapes. Everyone loved making a special number crown. We picked a number that was special to us…..our age! We made shapes in lots of ways. Shapes with the masking tape and shape collage pictures. We enjoyed stories with shapes and songs with numbers too.

In Reception to kick off the day they took part in a Maths number hunt outside on the outdoor area, they played ‘what time is it Mrs Wolf?’, completed a number of activities in 10 seconds and counted how many they did such as star jumps, jumps and lunges they did. They also linked our maths to mental health week by doing some mindfulness yoga. The children also used their own feet to make rulers and used them to compare how big and small objects were.  They completed a number of maths games and activities throughout the day in and throughout the provision including creating their own number character and solving maths problems on the IWB.

Year 1 had a great Number Day! They conducted a survey to find out which fruit Year 1 preferred. They used their data to create a pictogram on Purple Mash. It was clear to see that they prefer apples to pears! They used their pictogram to answer key questions using key vocabulary like greater, fewer, altogether.

Children had great fun using their mathematical knowledge to help solve a farmyard problem. They helped Mr Lee to identify which animals he had on his farm this morning. With a total of 14 legs, they worked out how many hens and sheep he had. They used pictures, number sentences and tables to record their ideas. Well done!

In Year 2, we became detectives and had to solve clues to find out who had found the missing class bear! We used lots of number skills to work out the answers, and each answer gave us a bit of information that we could use to narrow down the names on the list. Eventually we found out it was.... Freya!

In Year 3 to start off the number day we completed Fizz Buzz with the 5 and 3 times tables, it became very confusing when they changed any number in the times tables with fizz or buzz. Following the maths games they solved Buddy's key challenge.  Buddy lives in a magical forest where he has been visiting schools through a special door in an enchanted tree. He really wanted to visit Hugo Meynell but the door was locked and there was a problem with the key; when Buddy sent the key to us it was broken into ten pieces!

We were given some clues to solve the problems and found the pieces of the key around the classroom. Now the key is put back together we have been able to open the magic door to meet Buddy!

This morning, year 4 did some reasoning problem solving exercises working in pairs using practical resources. We went outside and made a human bar chart to show where our birthdays fell in the year, and we then thought of our favourite ice cream flavours and made a human bar chart to show which were most popular in our class. Our bar chart clearly showed that Year 4 prefer chocolate!  This afternoon we did 'Who wants to be a millionaire times tables' in teams - we were pleased to make quite a few millionaires out of year 4!

Year 5 have had a great time celebrating Number Day. They worked together on Buddy’s key challenge to solve maths puzzles in order to find pieces of a key hidden around the room. These keys when found created a jigsaw to help send Buddy into space. The children also had some great fun dancing and singing along to maths music videos.

Year 6 have had a great day celebrating Number Day. The children have loved their 'Rainbow Maths' sessions. They have been calculating fraction, decimals and percentage problems in the most colourful way!
