Art Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement

Intent

At Hugo Meynell Primary School, we want Art to be a subject that gives our children the  freedom to express themselves in a way that gives them enjoyment and personal fulfilment. We want children to acquire the skills and knowledge of art in a systematic was so that each child is able to produce results that demonstrate their achievements. We want Art to offer lots of practical experiences that excite children and give them confidence in their own creativity and use of their imagination. Our child led approach enables children to develop self confidence in the way that they explore the creative world. We understand that art has the capacity to support children ‘s emotional wellbeing and consider this as an important part of our curriculum.

Implementation

The skeleton of our art curriculum is the national curriculum. We do not use a commercial scheme for art but have instead devised our own progression map that sequences the skills and knowledge of Art systematically. The progression map is designed to enable cross curricular teaching and learning in all year groups. For example, tone in year 4 is taught as a basic skill linked to an artist, this skill has then been practiced and then applied linking to the year group topic ‘paws for thought’ and making comparisons to the front cover of the current class novel Varjak Paw.  In creating our curriculum, we further unpicked the curriculum skills and broke these down into smaller steps, this supports teachers with subject knowledge and allows for skill progression and repetition.  We are confident that consistency of this approach is strong with teachers working collaboratively and planning art projects as a team supported by appropriate CPD.

Impact

A result of our Art curriculum we create a love of learning which allows all children to achieve their personal best. This gives them the creative skills to express themselves and communicate with the aesthetics of the world around them.
